Religion never had anything to do with my love of science. I attribute my love of science to my dad, and to the fact that I'm good at math and science (my brain just seems to be good at that sort of thinking, as opposed to more qualitative subjects like literature and history). My dad would always tell me about some new neat thing he read about recently (usually science related), and he's always been interested in how things work, especially mechanical things, and his interests have rubbed off on me.
I'm Unitarian Universalist, maybe that's why I've never seen a conflict between science and religion. I actually first learned about how we evolved from apes to cavemen to today's humans in Sunday School! To me, religion is a spiritual thing, an emotional thing, a personal thing, while science is a way of thinking about the way the world (universe) works. They deal with two different things! I know not everyone feels the way I do, and that's fine.
I love astronomy, because it involves all of science - it's the study of the universe, after all! Actually I first got interested in physics in high school, because I discovered that physics was basically applied math, and I was very good at math but didn't want to be a mathematician. I still consider astronomy to be a subset of physics, but so many other things come into play, like chemistry and even biology. I also astronomy because of all the pretty pictures :-)
I don't really have a favorite scientist. I've never been the type to have favorites (I'm very indecisive).

Pretty heavy topic, opinions of which would fill volumes. I was interested in science from a very early age, but raised Catholic. I felt from my earliest years that there was a strong conflict between the two. At the age of 9 I denounced Catholicism and have since become a devout atheist. Science still fascinates me, although I did not pursue it as a career as I had intended early on. Science's empirical and tangible data, for me, proves everything I need to know and understand about the universe and life. Religion is based on myth, superstition, here-say, and at the risk of ruffling a lot of feathers, plain ignorance. This is of course my opinion, so don't anyone reading this take direct offense. This opinion comes from 40 years of life experience, study, and learning, and I'm sticking to it.

I became interested in science because it was logical and once you understood the processes, things just snapped into place. My favourite scientist has to be Richard Feynman, not only because of his particle interaction work but also for coming up with some great quotes such as:
"Physics is like sex. Sure, it may give some practical results, but that's not why we do it."
And I think that sort of sums up a lot of people I know and their interest in science - pure curiousity.

The scientific method is based on proven logical principles. This makes it the most reliable way to find the truth when evaluating the physical world. My favorite topic is astronomy, however my favorite scientist is Charles Darwin. The theory of evolution changed the entire world.

Science to me is the tangible combination of math and logic. It gives us the ability to explain what occurs around us with precision.
My favorite scientist was Kepler who theorized that the Earth and other planets revolved around the Sun, not the other way around as was commonly believed during the 17th century.

I truthfully have enjoyed technological know-how through fact i become a sprint lady in grade college. that is approximately answering questions, in seek of understanding, and discovery. technological know-how and faith are 2 diverse ballparks to me and that is not puzzling for me to maintain them separate. i don't practice any particular faith besides, I truthfully have discovered greater spirituality interior the woods close to my abode than in any brick development. technological know-how spread out the skies to me; astronomy fascinates me. through fact of technological know-how, I more advantageous a existence-long love of examining that has served me o.k.. I cherished Carl Sagan and could watch Cosmos while that is on each now and then. that's the thought merely around the corner is something new and thrilling merely waiting to be discovered. i prefer to be there while it occurs. i'm hoping i'm alive while we make "first touch".

My agnosticism has nothing to do with my interest in science...that's apples and ORANGES,
Why do people insist on dragging religion into discussions about science. One deals with the testable and the provable and the other depends on faith alone. They don't intersect.

Another Orange fell on me. That made me take up science, I was having scoops of Ice Cream when an orange fell on me. Then, another orange fell on me.
I love Newton.
