Everytime i put in a PS1 disc i get the red cloud screen which reads "Please enter a playstation or playstation 2 disc". The discs are clean and so is the lens on the PS2. Can anyone help?

Are they US coded games? If they are international, then your PS2 will require some modification to work. Try sony.com for troubleshooting tips.

Contrary to what the first two answeres have told(no offense), the PS2 is able to play PS1 games. However some games from the PS1 are incompatible with the PS2. This is the list:
