If you mean a TRUE sports car, I would say the Pontiac Solstice GXP or Honda S2000.
Other options would be the:
Mazda Miata, but it is more expensive and less powerfull than the GXP.
Lotus Elise, but it is the most expensive by far.
Saturn Sky Turbo, which is the same as the solstice just a little more stylish and more expensive.
The Nissan 350Z, more powerfull, a lot more weight, but fair priced.
The Mazda RX8, but its underpowered, expensive, and plagued with motor issues. Has a backseat too, all though not really.
***
PS the Mustang is not a sports car by any means. It is classified as a muscle car. Plus it has a backseat.
A sports car is generally defined as a lightweight, rear wheel drive, two seat car that's primary focus is the pure enjoyment of driving. (some will say it has to be a convertible or roadster, but this along with the two-seater part is negotiable.)
A true sports car focuses on handling, roadholding, road feel, feedback, and nimbleness. Powerband, engine response, and gearing are more important than max HP or TQ.

Corvette...best buy for what you get. Can't afford a new one? Get a C4. Their values have hit bottom and are rising. A C5 will keep losing its value like all cars but start to rise in about 10 yrs.

The best deal as far as power for money is still the Chevrolet Corvette. You can spend much more for equivilant power, but
the Corvette is the complete package (as far as production vehicles)
