It would depend on what your cycle is like and also how long your period lasts. It will be slightly different for each woman.
Let me explain. You will ovulate at a half way point between the first day of your last period and the first day of the one coming up. Assuming that you were on an average 28 day cycle that would mean that you would ovulate on the 14th day after you started your period. If your period lasted the usual 5 to 7 days then THEORETICALLY you would have a safe time of about 5 days when you would not get pregnant. I emphasize the theoretically part because every woman is different and there is some variation even for each woman. Most women are not exactly the same in this regard every month.
I have known of women that actually got pregnant while on their period and virtually at every time in between.
My answer to you would have to be this, it is unlikely but it IS possible. If you are trying to conceive it is not the best time to do so. However if you do not want to become pregnant I would recommend some secondary form of birth control.

I believe that pretty much anything is possible, and I learnt in Health class that you can get pregnant any time of the month, then again it could have been a scare tactic. Anyway don't take any chances.

Depends on your ovulation time.. You only can conceive during your ovulation period.. If you know your body well enough you should know when that occurs and that's when you do not have unprotective sex.. Remember too, there's alot of STD's out there and aids... Make sure you know this person and be careful...

If your not trying to have a baby..use protection. If you are, yes, his sperm can live in your body for up to 5 days...which is longer than your "safe" time zone.
