There are quite a few "pockets" of charm in and around London. Those that spring to mind just now are Hampstead; Little Venice/Maida Vale; parts of Chelsea going towards the Thames; parts of Kensington; parts of Chiswick. (Must be many more...)

Richmond or Kew. Both leafy and near the river.

I dont Know if this is what your asking for... but I loved Leichester Square. I spent my lunch there when i was in London. You dont find anything like that in New Jersey.

Hapmstead is my favorite!

Richmond is very nice as well, but a bit far...
