can different potatoes cross polinate?

we grew some yellow and some white potatoes side by side and I got a couple that seemed to be half white and half yellow.

yes they will for sure, it is the original parent plant that your 2 cultivars originated from.

dont expect to cross a normal potato with a sweet potato though.

Cross-breeding may happen, but is not guaranteed. My mom has two rose bushes next to each other, and over the years one new baby rosebush has appeared and it features both red and white petals. so, potatoes may possibly be cross-bred.
