Strange.

I lived in Kyoto for 3 years and found the Japanese rather cultured and polite.

Culture clash and please remember that when in roam, often times you will hear foreigners speak of their own society in comparison to ours. See it has a level of homesickness and not as an insult.

Instead of getting angry, ask more about the person's home. Take an interest and a little more tolerance. Dig deeper my friend. Usually, what lies underneath is so much more interesting than what you initially see.

Respect the Japanese. They're one of the greatest people on this planet!!!!! They are polite, you're not. Go live there and learn some manners.

maybe ur the oversensitive one. if they are, i dont see why they have to hide it just cuase some rude american will get ofened by being reminded of his inferior upbringing.
