Yes it does. The more you make your phone "think" the more battery it uses. To save my battery life, I:
Have a fairly boring screen-saver and wallpaper. I turned the brightness down on the phone so not so much power needs to be going to the LCD lights to power the screen, and lots of other things. Animated wallpaper will decrease your battery life, but just slightly.
