That's a very tough decision, and hard for a twelve year old to comprehend. But let's give it a try with some platform issues of both parties starting with the Dems.

Democrats:
1.Would let you deduct your college loan interest on taxes. This won't affect her until she's 24. But will still affect her nonetheless.
2. Democrats have strong environmental policies they believe in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, to help combat global warming.
3. Democrats do not support school vouchers for private school, they believe public money belongs to public schools.
4. Democrats also believe in a progressive tax system. She won't understand this yet. Until she has a job.
5. Many Democrats believe in free trade e.g. the Clintons
6. They also would allow illegal immigreants to come into this nation. e.g. the Clintons

The Republicans:
1. Believe in school vouchers for private school.
2. They believe the progressive tax system is wrong.
3.Environmentlly they have many ideas, but they tend to resist the idea of global warming.
4. On college you pay as you go, or take a loan and pay it back. They do not, or I am not aware of any kind of relief towards higher learning.
5. Many Republicans believe in free trade. e.g. the Bush's
6. They would also allow illegal immigrants into this nation. e.g. the Bush's.

I am a registered inependent that leans left of center, and these are just a few issues for you and your daughter to think about.

I believe these are real issues that will affect your prosperity and future. #5 and #6 are the ones both parties have a failing grade.

Try watching Lou Dobbs on CNN at 6:00 pm eastern standard time, he is very good at explaining the faults and positives of both parties.

Here's my theory on the difference between conservatives and liberals (which you can relate to the diff. between Republicans and Democrats).

For me, the root of liberalism is the belief that all people are fundamentally good, but can be made bad; while conservatism stems from the belief that evil is inherrent in humans, and they must be guided (by laws or religioin) to being good.

In their extremes, both positions are wrong. Humans are a little of both.

The charicature of the "bleeding-heart liberal" (which is a stupid phrase), believes that all social problems are a result of environmental conditions (poverty, child abuse, lack of opportunity) ... hence the emphasis on using government to address these social conditions. The same extends to foreign policy ... the first instinct when someone attacks us is to try and understand *why* ... what are the social conditions that led to them hating us?

The charicature "heartless conservative" (also a stupid image) believes that evil is inherrent ... that if people are poor or criminals it is their own fault ... that we need religion to guide us away from our evil ways ... and laws to protect good people from bad ... that punishment is more effective than reform. Along those lines, the instinct with foreign policy is that when someone strikes us, we punish them by striking back harder.

Neither position is correct. In the extreme. To believe that you can appease criminals and terrorists leaves you vulnerable to them. But to believe that you can simply punish criminals or terrorists into submission is also futile, and almost always leads to more criminals and terrorists, and a progressively bleaker world.

So both approaches are absolutely necessary ... in *balance*. An all-Democrat government would be just as bad as an all-Republican government.

So you have to decide where your temperament leads you. But no matter which side you choose, it is *wrong* to demonize the other side ... to say that they are "less American" or they "support our enemies." That kind of intolerance ... to the level of open *hatred* ... that Americans have for other Americans (as expressed in YA posts, from both sides) is poison. We should question, and argue vehemently, with the approach suggested by the other side ... but we should never question their patriotism, or their concern for their country.

Basically, Democrats tend to favor more central authority in the federal government, based in the nation's capital in Washington, and Republicans believe in control through state and local governments. Republicans also believe in less restrictions on private enterprise, and that the private sector can do more to solve the nation's problems. Democrats believe that the federal government's role is to deal with issues and problems, as private enterprise often has conflicts of interests.

The Republicans are pure evil (like cheerleaders), hence the Democrats being the lesser of two evils.
