The three most likely answers I can think of are these:
1. You have an infestation of grubs
2. there is too great a concentration of lawn clippings on the spots
3. A fungus, if the ground is moist, is attacking the grass.
If 1 or 2 is the case, you'd better hurry and resolve the matter right away so you can avoid a big job of redoing a major part of the lawn. Take a sample of the dead grass and the soil to a lawn and garden shop or your local agricultural extension agent. You should be able to get some answers fairly soon. Good luck!

This can be a difficult question to answer, especially at this time of year when most lawns are going into their dormant Winter phase.
My first effort would be to determine if you have an insect problem, possibly Grubs. You can take a small garden shovel and dig down into one of the brown spots. You don't have to go very deep to find Grubs if that's the problem. Grubs love to stay under ground in the root structure of your yard where they can snack on the roots all day. If it is grubs, there are commercial remedies available at any home improvement store or garden center.

Could be grubs(the larva of june bugs), could be from pet pee, could be from thatch, could be that the dirt is so shallow there it does not hold moisture so the lawn dies...
if it is grubs(do any of your neighbors have grubs or have any total lawns been replaced in your area) and you do not treat it all you could loose the entire lawn OR animals like raccoon and moles could move in to dine on the grubs...call a lawn service they will come for free and tell you what it is then you can treat it or have them do it...

You can fertalize your grass. Go to wal-mart and get a small bag of fertalizer pellets. It might be 7-10$ a bag which will last you all summer because you only need a tiny bit or it will burn your grass.
If nothing works, buy roll out grass. It might cost $300 for your lawn but you will have nice grass =)

Small spots? Wherever our dog pees, about 2 days later a brown circle appears. Just a thought.
