I read something recently where Paul McCartney said in an interview that when they first came on the scene in the early 1960s Mr. Epstien absolutely forbade them to indicate which football club on Merseyside they prefered. Instead they were told to say they really were not football fans at all. Anyone who knows Liverpool would know this would be absolutely impossible. Football is a major part of life in Liverpool, and everyone is engaged in it in some way.

Anyway, I believe he said that he was an Evertonian, as was George, but Ringo and John were Liverpool fans. I can't remember if that lineup is correct and I can't find the article but if any of you know who supported which club, please let us know. Thanks!

That line up would make sense if everything went along the old lines of support and their family histories. Paul and George were both from staunch Irish Catholic families with ancestrial roots in the Scotland Road waterfront district of Liverpool. This was a core area of support for Everton. John and Ringo both were raised Protestants, even though they were both largely of Irish Catholic ancestry, together they would have mingled amongst the type of people who would have supported Liverpool. Ringo in particular, since he was raised in the Dingle in Toxteth. This was a traditional Protestant, working-class area. Just the type of people Liverpool used to cater to back in the days of old.

Of course, this sectarian business no longer plays a role in Liverpool football, unlike Glasgow.

On another note, I seem to remember seeing a photograph of John shortly before he died brandishing an Everton scarf, so maybe he was an Everton supporter too.
