They know the rules better? since when is hostage taking, beheadings and torture part of the rules? They might understand total destruction like you said, but thats not the rules, might be an objective, but not the rules.

i agree with another perspective - they didn't even wage war (i dont think they have even fought a proper battle - a skirmish here, a skirmish there) but occupying a country is not a war - its a struggle to win the minds of the residents...

I think their advantage is that they don't have rules to follow and are not held accountable by anyone that means anything to them.
Their "no holds barred" attitude makes them better fighters and their desire/willingness to commit suicide for their beliefs gives them an upperhand as well.
