we have 200, four-hundred pound men, sitting in a 1973 model bus going 160 miles per hour, if one of these large men pees out the window, slowing the bus to 140 miles per hour for 5 minutes, what is the average speed of the bus over a 300 miles trip????

avg speed = total distance / total time:

time 5 min = 1/12 hrs and
distance covered is 140 miles/hr x 1/12 hrs
= 11 2/3 miles

Remaining distance would take
[300-11 2/3] / 160 hrs
=288 1/3 dived ed by 160
= 865/480 hrs

Total time is 1/12 hrs + 865/480 hrs
= 905/480 hrs giving

avg speed as 300 x 480 /905
= 159.13 miles/hrs (approx) Ans

Avg. speed = total distance / total time

Total distance = 300 miles

To find total time, we have:
140 mph for 5 minutes accounts for
140 miles/hr x (5 minutes) x (1 hr / 60 min) = D1 (a number that you should calculate.

So the bus went a distance of D1 in 5 minutes.
That leaves a distance of (300 - D1).
At 160 mph, this will take a time of:
(300 - D1) miles / (160 miles/hr) = T1 hours (which you should calculate)

Total time = T1 + (5 / 60) hours (another number you should calculate

Avg. speed = ..................see formula at the beginning of this answer.

There are a number of problems with your question.

The number and weight of passengers on the bus will have no effect on the average speed. Also, one man urinating out of the window would not slow the bus down.

You have specified the length of journey (300 miles). You have not, however, specified the total duration (time taken) of the journey.

To calculate the average speed, divide distance by time.
