I get sad because I have so many ideas of what Christmas should be like and it never happens. Either people have other plans, which, of course, is fine or I just can't do what I'd like because of ill health. I think that I would ignore Christmas completely this year if I didn't have a granddaughter. She's just so excited about the tree that I can't disappoint her.

I do, because I think of the people I love that aren't here anymore to share the holidays with. Being able to keep all those precious memories of them and special Christmases is how I get through it. But, I cherish the here and now and make more memories for my son to cherish in the future. Everytime we do something special like go Christmas shopping together or decorate the tree, I say "Now this will be a great Christmas memory". He says, "It sure will Mommy".

It will be sad this year with the recent passing of a close family member. But children always create a positive influence at the holidays. I think it's also important to remember those who have less. If you have more, assisting those in need may bring about the 'warm and fuzzy' feelings of the holidays.

I guess people get sed during Christmas because of the diminishing light period. It's called "SAd" : Seasonal affective disorder ( http://www.sada.org.uk/ ).

Moreover, for people that are alone, it's difficult to cope with loneliness. There is also a lot of stress (gift buying, party preparations), etc.
