The National League was founded in 1876; the American League in 1901. The NL is 25 years older, hence the Senior Circuit.

Please ignore answers number 1 and answer number 2. Jeremy is correct; the National League (Senior Circuit) was founded in 1876. The American League was founded in 1901; many of the teams in the old Western League became the charter members.
The original teams were the Baltimore Orioles (later moved to New York to become the Highlanders, now Yankees); the Detroit Tigers; the Milwaukee Brewers (later moved to St. Louis as the Browns, then to Baltimore as the Orioles in 1954); the Philadelphia Athletics; the Cleveland Indians; the Chicago White Stockings (Sox); the Boston Pilgrims (Red Sox); and the Washington Nationals (also known as the Senators, later moving and becoming the Minnesota Twins).

National League is the senior circuit because it's older starting in 1876 and the American League is the Junior Circuit beginning in 1901.

I do not know much about this, but I think it might also have to do with the National League was always the superior league, it was of higher quality, that was where all the best players went, it was the 'big league', while the AL was seen to be below it (as the minor leagues are below the major leagues now) and then the AL declared it was equal, and the two leagues were created..??

You did mix it up, but it is because the AL has been around longer than the NL. So, the AL is the senior circuit, while the NL is the junior circuit.
