We turn our furnace to 50 at night and then it runs for a very long time to warm up to 65 when we get up. Would it be better to just set it at 60 and leave it there all the time?

I've saved a ton O money this way! Get a programable t-stat. they will keep your homestead at your set temp constantly. You should always drop you over nifgt temp a degree or two. My stat has an indoor-outdoor senser. If it gets to warm out side, my furnace goes into a warm weather shut down. And regardless of what I have it set at, If it gets too cold out, the furnace will fire to bring the housse up to 22 C.(canadian). your local wal-mart/home building store will have them.

it will take a very long time to get the house to warm back up if you are turning it down so low for such a short period of time. It is easier on the furnace to leave it at a constant temp. I have been told that you can leave just the fan on and it will circulate the air in the house and turn on the heat just when it needs it. Good luck.

I don't really know, but I'm glad to see someone esle has thought of this. I've always wondered why it should take more BTUs to warm the house from 63 to 65 ten times during the night than it takes to warm it from 50 to 65 once in the morning. Surely someone has calculated this, but it seems backward to me.

it will have no negative effect on how well your furnace will operate to leave it up at night, however, it is best for efficiency if you leave it at a constant temperature, for as you have stated , the furnace will have to run extra long time to warm up to desired temperature if you cut it down like this... you are at more of a risk of over heating the furnace if it runs at longer periods of time than just a few minutes here and there,,,,,,hope this helps,,,

You should only turnit down to 60 because ofthe long recovery time in the morning to get comfortable. What happens when you turn it down too much is that all your furnishings walls etc get cold and those have to be reheated too.I would also recommend a programmable t-stat.

depending on the age of your home.. according to terasean gas 72 in the day time and no lower than 65 at night.. they say youll save 10-15 perecent on your gas bill. a programable t-stat will help so if you work at certain times of the day you can lower the temperature and raise it to fit your needs. And a programable t-stat they say will save more money..

The answer is "No" it takes as much or more to bring the heat back up to what you want. You should have realized that.

50 at night is rather cool, don't you think? We leave our at 72 degrees and it's perfect for sleeping and during the day.

There is a thermostat that will come up an hour before you wake, and yes set it higher if it takes a long time to recover. You might check your house for heat loss, and correct for drafts, etc.
