by external i assume you mean anything outside of what yahoo itself has done/created
and the only things i can really think of is the developement of personal computers and the internet, those two factors set up the opportunity for yahoo,,,,, the coming of age of the "baby boomers" who love their technology and toys,,,,, was most likely significant also

One external factor would be the number of people chosing to use Yahoo. It would not have the popularity it does if it didn't have such a large, connected, customer base.
Another one would be the advent of mobile messaging. If people were not use to using mobile phones, and text messaging, they would not have the desire for the Yahoo services. Basically, without mobile technology, the Yahoo services probably would not have been invented.
