Cali ain't called the Killing fields for nothing! And safety depends on who you are. I am a young effeminate white male and I live in the worst part of SF (Tenderloin-30% of SF's overall crime). I have NO problem dealing with crackheads, and there are plenty of police. My friend got beat down and mugged crossing Colubus in the tourist district of little Italy by some young white punk. Honestly if you were going to mug somebody where would you go-the poor neighborhood or the touristed one.
70% of homocide is commited by someone the victim knows. You seem to have been influenced by media hype.
I have also travelled to Bangladesh, Cameroon, Venezuela, and Europe. Never once been the victim of a crime (knock on wood!).
I suppose San Francisco is safer than Baghdad if you want to look at it like that.
If you follow a few simple rules, you'll probably fine:
-Avoid going out alone at night as much as possible
-If you have to go out stay on well-lit, well-travelled streets,
-Don't pull out your wallet in public. If you want to give to the homeless have spare dollars in your other pocket in advance.
-Ignore people who try and get your attention or stop you on the street, be aware, just don't acknowledge.
-Avoid looking like an easy target, Dress down and like the locals.
-Some say smokers are less likely to get mugged 'cause it can be used as a weapon. Others say this prompts people to approach and ask for a cigarette, then mug you. Never happened to me.
-Your wallet is not worth your life.
-Have a local (born here) show you around.
The worst places of the SF Bay are supposedly West Oakland, Candlestick Park, and the Outer Mission.
Presidio is the nice expensive place. North of Market is much nicer than South of Market.
The Tenderloin is pretty seedy, but only a few blocks away is the nicest area of town. San Francisco is pretty crunched together.
As for Berkeley, I would rather deal with crackheads than those stuck up students and faculty. They can be inhumanly cruel to waitresses and service people. It makes me sick.
as for San Diego it is more than 50% hispanic, whatever that means to you.
I like San Francisco. I am also dating a cop.
Good luck with your move.
P.S. The most dangerous part of the city is the government. I owe $1,000 in parking tickets. Those are the real theives. I once got two parking tickets 7 minutes apart. They have silly taxes in California. MY STATE TAXES TRIPLED upon moving!!!

Berkley is the safest, in San Fransico, and San Diego, count on being shot, stabbed, or mugged.

It depends on the neighborhood, they all have "bad" area's. Call a local college in the area maybe they can help.
