It soulds like you could have asthma, especially if breathing out was more painful than breathing in. If you have trouble waking up at night, coughing up phlegm and breathless, these are further symptoms.

If you do have these symptoms one trick I find helps my asthma is to have a rolled up blanket place UNDERNEATH your mattress at the head end to raise your mattress up by about 5 - 10 cms and have a few pillows (3 should suffice). This way you are sleeping more upright which helps.

IN ANY CASE: You MUST visit your gp as your symptoms are quite worrying! S/he will be able to do simple breathing tests to determine if you have asthma. You will then be started on medication depending on the severity of it. This will really help!!

Its soulnds like you are experiancing athsma, and this can be be serious or even fatal if you leave it untreated....you should take this very very seriously....I am amazed that you did not end up in ER on the day this happened...nobody was alarmed with your symptoms enough to call an ambulance???? Nevertheless....seek medical attention for this as soon as possible.

I have bronchial asthma, when I get a cold it is like that you should be checked for it. If that is what you have you did the right thing but they can get you on an inhaler and some meds that should help!

you could possibly have asthma, go see your GP as soon as possible, the reason your chest gets sore is because you are breathing harder than normal to get the oxygen you need, you should really get checked out, don't mean to scare you but you could have respiratory failure then cardiac failure when this happens again if it is not controlled.

Could be a number of reasons but rather than asking people on here and getting lots of different response, get yourself to the docs ASAP and get a professional answer.
