Israel pulled out of Gaza over a year ago. Hamas's reaction was, "Today Gaza, tomorrow Jerusalem." Immediately they used their freedom to fire rockets at Israeli towns. Then they attacked a border patrol, abducting a soldier.
Israel pulled out of Lebanon in 2000. Within six months, Hezbollah crossed into Israel from Lebanon, kidnapped three IDF soldiers, and killed them. Since then, over the next six years, Hezbollah has continually bombarded Northern Israel with mortar and Katyusha rocket fire. The ceasefire will continue until UNIFIL pulls out.
Israel responded to both over the summer. While Bush gave the usual obligitory lip-service regarding restraint, both the Administration and the Congress offerred unmitigated support to Jerusalem.
As for the press, I'm sure you have heard of the doctored photos from Reuters, but have you heard about the Lebanese woman who lost her home twice in a week?

The anti-bias media here says that mostly it is the Israelis fault that there is no peace in the area. Hezbollah did a good job of faking the results of the war with Israel and many here think that Israel went to far.
They seemed to forget about the sucide bombing that both the PLO and Ha mas are doing and that it was Hezbollah that sent rockets and missiles daily before Israel went on the offensive.

Most Americans believed the story that Israel's strikes against Lebanon were defensive and justified. Israel has a strong public relations machine in the US. US leaders, namely Bush, Rice and UN Ambassador John Bolton, gave Israel a blank check to continue bombing Lebanon for as long as it wanted. In the middle of the conflict, the US sent an emergency shipment of bunker buster bombs to Isreal, and some bottled water to Lebanon. How can any of this be good for any peace process?

I have spoken to many Palestinians and Lebenese. Many have lost hope and feel there is no justice. For the most part, Americans were made aware of the carnage caused by Israeli attacks and we got to see photos of dead babies, in general, we were horrified. I cannot tell you how the Israelis feel, but I saw a photo of Israeli children being guided to write personal message on missiles that were bound for Lebanon.
