It has always been this contentious. The reason it has become a political "football" is that the religious fringe has taken control of politics, making this the American Taliban. Because it is an issue with no middle-ground and, therefore, no real possibility of compromise, it is likely to be a hot issue for a long time.

It was made into a political football largely at the urging of the Catholic church back when the AMA was first formed. Laws were needed limiting the authority to practice medicine to licensed doctors, and the AMA wanted these laws to include the authority to be present at births, taking this away from midwives and making a reliable source of income for doctors. The Catholic church pledged its support if the doctors would also take birth control and abortion away from midwives. These practices were never specifically banned, but there was a sort of 'gentleman's agreement' to limit them. There were doctors who commonly did abortions, but they had to be very, very discreet. Everybody believed--and thus behaved--as if it were illegal. That it was in fact a legal practice hit the fan with the Roe vs. Wade trial, where the question was not about legality but whether the authorities could intrude on private medical treatment. The answer was no. Rather than being legalized, it came out that it had never been illegal. Now the same conservative religious forces that had relied on a gentleman's agreement had to fight to have their views written into law, with the current fight over abortion as a predictable result.

Because for alot of us it is murder not a personal choice, well I guess it is a choice to murder someone but it is still murder.
And it was only made legal because of political pressure, not real law. It was based on the right to privacy, which is silly.
The father got no rights in the issue ( where is his rights)
but in the end, it is murder and murder is not a choice.
So that is the issue, a large majority of people in the US see it as murder, and see abortion as something forced on the people by judges not law makers.

It's like legalizing murder. It's like asking why murder is a political issue. It's like saying that if someone hates you and wants to kill you, it is strictly a personal choice. That person should be able to gun you down like a dog in the street, because they felt they couldn't live with you in the world.
It's like legalizing child abuse... Andrea Yates would have been perfectly within her rights to have drowned all of her children, since she no longer wanted them. And every parent who starves or beats their children to death would be within their rights.
It all boils down to whether abortion is about getting rid of unwanted tissue or getting rid of a human being (a.k.a. murder).
That's why it's political... there has to be a political process before something can be made into law. Me? I'm glad murder is illegal.

i actually think of that specific segments of the non secular good polarize around lowest common denominators which comprise race, abortion, and different subjects through fact they're rather decrease and dry with which to channel their collective hate. in case you look on the later component of the final US presidential election that is obvious that the republicans reached out to those communities in a final minute attempt for votes. merely watch the video "good usa feeling Wronged" with the help of Alex Pelosi and you will see examples of that. Roe vs Wade isn't overturned through fact that could merely create a super black marketplace of back alley abortion sweat shops that could merely cripple the rustic's wellbeing care device on a plague point extraordinary in social scientific history.

They use it as a pawn to stir emotions in people who have so called "Morals" Just like they use the Gay issue which also shouldn't be an issue to vote on but a Civil rights issues heard at the Supreme Court level.

it's not a personal issue, it a society pays for it issue, and as a taxpayer, I am sick of paying for children born out of wedlock for unwed mother who sought some hot guy, killing off the futus just becuase your irresponsible is not a personal issue, it's a selfish lack of responsiblity issue. If your thinking were to hold true then any man should be able to kill off a women who divorces him simply because her decisin to divorcewill affect his future economic earning power.. and we both know that does not make sense.. neither does abortion. Women play heroine when it's going there way and the are making there own way in life, but quickly roll over and play victim when it's not rather than face up to their own responsiblity and failures as men are forced to do in life. This is why women will never be equal to men, they always have the option to play victim

Thank you. It is a personal issue. Keep the government out of our lives. If you don't want an abortion, don't have one. End of story.

because everyone has an opinion. People protest and fight and even kill others who give abortions or have abortions The law isn't enough for some people.. sometimes people only respect laws that they agree with.

It is a battle over the lives of thousands of children of irresponsible parents. If it was just a personal issue, then alot of babies would be lost when they could have been adopted.
