It sometimes works, depending on the disk, some blank cd/dvd's have a problem at the end of the writing process. But not always. Also when it starts reading a disk it makes a very loud clicking noise or something like that. Certin disks boot from cd and some wont that should also. How can I test the hardware?

If you're burning a bootable CD, burn at 8X or less. Bootable disks burned at higher speeds can have problems.

Have you gone into Device manager to see if it has a question mark on it? go to start, control panel, system, hardware and device manager. that will show you what type the drive is. You can also see if there is updated drivers from that screen that you might need. The problems you seem to be having from your question, makes me think it might need updated drivers. If you are able to use it sometimes and not others, the connections may be loose also. That would just need you to eject it and reseat it. If the connections are loose inside the notebook, a technician may have to check it out for you.
