An iPod is an mp3 player, but it plays AAC encoded music as well. AAC is Apples proprietary encoding and copy protection scheme. Some of the other mp3 players will play Windows WMA files, OGGs, and other formats.
I've had a number of mp3 players, but once I got the iPod (30 GB Video) I stopped searching for now. It's the best I've owned, and Apple's usage agreement for the use of copied protected files is fairly liberal.

Both play the music you want. But the real difference comes with each one's compatibility.
You can just copy music to any ordinary mp3 player and play them. But with iPod, you can synchronize your library over internet and can maintain your music list always updated. You can even dock the iPod to many latest systems like the Bose speakers or to your car music system. iPod has many accessories and it is like nearly a computer dedicated to music processing.
As per my knowledge, iPod is a good go for your Christmas. Anyway, also see other people's suggestions here.
Merry Christmas! :)

Depends on what else you want with the music. I got my kids and myself an ipod shuffle (99.00) just for music. You can get MP3s for less. Ipod only uploads from itunes- MP3s can upload from yahoo music, musicmatcgh etc. We don't have any problems- and my daughter wants to upgrade to a nano- but for 50.00 more she might get a ipod that holds and plays more- including video etc. Check and compare on Yahoo Tech- good site!

My chum has a Zen with a recorder with respectable area and a life like ordinary interface. or you may want to get an Ipod and purchase a MicroMemo. I have one and that i love it, tremendous sound high quality. i even use it to list my guitar to play with diverse tracks and issues. stay remote from the Zune.
