Make him a small family album with lots of pictures of you and your family together. That way, he can take it with him and see all your smiling faces.

How about something with credit-card sized photos of you and the family. It must get lonely when he is away. You can decorate the border in any style you like.

This is something you or a friend who knows more about computers can do :-

Take photos with a digital camera or scan-in existing photos with a scanner (many printers have a scanner nowadays)

Transfer them via the camera cable to files on the computer

Re-size them using a photo-editing program like Microsoft Paint so that they are credit card sized, but leaving a white border for decoration.

Add a message to the photo in the photo-editing program, in a nice style of writing and color.

Print them on ordinary or glossy paper

Cut them to the right size

Write a message on the back, if you didn't do it in the photo-editor.

Decorate the edges somehow with glue and glitter or colored pens or stick-on colored dots.

Seal the photo in plastic, if you can. Ask people you know if they can think of a way to do this or search for instructions on the net. You can buy stuff in stationary stores for sealing document pages, with 2 layers of clear plastic which pull apart, you then put the photo in and squeeze the 2 halves back together.

A little neck pillow, the ones on the plane are rare, and germy. Try a pattern book, they may have a pattern for one. Ear plugs are inexpensive. Make him a CD with his favorite music, make a label for it that says "music to travel by."
Does he travel for pleasure? Some sort of a framed collage with all the places he has visited. Or a framed map with some sort of a cute little flag pin in each place he has been.

Gifts that make his travel easier are good, I used to travel, and appreciated such gifts. Go to a travel store in the mall, or most big retailers have sections devoted for travel.
Even the simplest gadget makes travel that much easier.

When my daughters were little their dad traveled for business too. They put their favorite pictures of themselves with him in little frames so he could pack them and then set them up in whatever hotel room he was in. Doesn't cost much to do that and he will always have you there with him.

A blanket made of fleece (available in most craft stores, like Joannes). All you have to do is the edges. Here's a great one:

Well, it's not something you can make, but it's not expensive. Radio Shack has a talking picture frame that you can record any message onto and it's totally portable, your dad can take it with him when he's gone. He would probably love it.

If you decide on buying a gift instead of making one, go with noise-cancelling earphones- they make airplanes tolerable!
