A good way to tell is you voice being hoarse and a sore throat. However, going to the Dr is very crucial. It could be a number of things and without proper medical care, you could have permanent damage.

usually you will loose your voice or get a husky voice,it is quite hard to damage them,you then go on to get nodules on your vocal chords,rest and surgery are the only cure

If your throat hurts when you talk or if you have a scratchy or husky voice that you can't get rid of, you've hurt your vocal cords.
