Even with the power on, the power on button doesnt light up or turn on. The motherboard shows some light but the system all of a sudden refuses to work anymore. Is this a hard disk problem or something worse?

Power supplies on computers go very often. They are not that expensive to replace. My guess is that is what happened. Take it to any computer store and they should be able to put in a new one and get you up and running in no time.

How are you posting this if the computer isn't working?

The hard drive does not control the power on light. Power is out somewhere on the line, from a fuse on the computer to the fuse box for that line.

If you don't have a UPS (uninterruptible power supply), the only possible source of power on the motherboard would be a capacitor that has not completely discharged.

The power supply is always the culprit to consider in this situation. Try and unplug the CD player Floppy and see if it turns on. Consider how much hardware you have will slowly but for sure slow down the PSU.. One of the biggest killers in PSU is hard shut down or leaving the computer on all night with out shutting it down is hard on the power supply.

most likely a power supply failure. the clue is that the motherboard has leds lit. Most power supply failures occcur on the 12vdc line. It appears that the +5vdc line is still powered.
purchase a lowcost power supply tester at CompUSA or simililar retailer.disconnect power cord, open case, disconnect main power plug into motherboard, plug tester into power plug, plug in powe cord, read tester, all lights should light up on a good power supply(many power supplies do not provide -5vdc so this led many not be lit. absence of lit leds confirms bad power supply

If you computer is getting power and everything, this is more than likely a memory problem. Your memory could be fried or something of that nature, try borrowing some from someone else and swapping them if you can. also could be the CPU, but memory is more likely the problem.

I think it is the power supply unit i.e. the S.M.P.S which seems to be faulty. You can test the system with a working S.M.P.S. Otherwise it may be mother board fault, display card fault or the C.P.U. might be dead.

if you just see a blank screen on your monitor, and the power on is lighting...then there are two possible problem you have...first is your motherboard, maybe your mother have short-circuit or overheat...second is your chip memory, maybe there the configuration (CMOS configuration) has been erased...
