The function of a neuron is communication.
1. Long axons allow for communication over long distances.
2. The branching structure allows for communication between lots of different cells.

Motor neurons have very long axons which helps transmission of nerve impulses over long distances. At the end there are 'root-like' structures called dendrites which make links (not quite touching) with other neurons so that information can be disseminated over a great many cells in the system.

It would probably be useful for you to look in your textbook to check all this out!
