I have the choice of getting a LL 1 yr 105 amp alternator, or a lifetime alternator for my 92 Cavalier 3.1 MP. The price difference is significant ( like $30). Can anyone tell me with the cheaper one if they go out after about a yr or so? Depending on the feedback I get to this question, I will determine which one to get. I am a tightwad.

What you really are asking is is worth $30 extra to get a warranty longer than 1 year on the alternator. You have to decide the value yourself. How long to you plan on keeping the car? What is the cost of the replacement alternator?

You are looking at a 14 year old vehicle. If you have a lot of miles on it, most likely you are going to replace the car before you have to replace the alternator again. If it was me, I would go with the one year warranty and not pay $30 extra for the lifetime. There should be no difference in the alternators, you are paying extra only for the warranty.

If you are planning on keeping the car for a while longer I would spend the extra 30$. If you dont mind paying for another alternator in a year then the cheap one will be fine. I have seen the cheap ones go bad in a month or less but as long as you have the warranty you can change it as much as you want. If you are paying for labor thats a whole different story. You might get lucky. with the year one.
