I moved into my house a year ago. There is an exterior pole lamp mounted in the yard near some stone stairs. Regular incandescent bulbs burn out after only about 10 days (lit for only about 1-2 hours/day). I put in a 5-year low-energy flourescent bulb, which lasted 2-3 months.

What can cause an electrical light to burn out bulbs so quickly? What should I do to repair it?

check the voltage if it is over 110-120 volts this will cause the bulbs to burn out to fast. I would take the bulbs back as they are guaranteed to last. You can try Halogen bulbs which may last longer

Household light bulbs do not do well outdoors, especially where there is rain or extreme temp changes. I would suggest getting a sodium vapor, (a yellow light) or metal halide, (a brilliant white light) fixture, wattage depending on your yard size. Get a fixture designed for outdoor use as they are sealed against the elements. They have all kinds of decorative or plain fixtures available and prices to fit any pocketbook.

Try a higher watt bulb. They may be getting to much electricity causing them to burn out.

Higher peak voltage and spike surges, and vibration, will shorten life of bulb. Try higher voltage bulb of rough service type.
