They write it down or put in in the cash register, yet they still get it wrong. Are they having trouble reading?

It isn't all of them, it just seems that way. I have a great deal of respect for servers. They are doing a job that you couldn't force me to do (I had to do it once, but I screwed everything up so badly they just let me do something else.)
Long hours, low pay, crabby customers (although I worked with people before and didn't mind helping the crabs), and little respect can take its toll on them.

I noticed that in your question you said " put in in the cash register". You did this by mistake because you answer, and ask a lot of questions. In restaurants the take and prepare a lot of orders, so you need to cut them a little slack. None of us are perfect.

I rarely have any problems with waiter/waitress who serves you at a table, but standing in line in a fast-foody place is a different story. Sometimes you run away with 3 french fry and one burger, when the order was placed for 3 burgers and 1 french fry. Drive-thrus are even worse, and who really looks in the bag until you are home, then surprise!

Because they are doing some pretty severe multi tasking and they are expected to be very quick and perfect.
There are many people who have a lot of special requests that slow things down and complicate things too.
Perhaps you are one of them?

They have a lot of people to serve and they have other things on their mind... try to be a little empathetic, eh? They're human too...

Obviously you've never had a job serving the public.

I think its because they cant read there own writing. It could also be because they are on drugs and think they heard one thing but really it was something completly diffrent.
