All the weekly circulars feature youthful models.

I’d like to buy a casual (not formal, not work) winter coat that is age appropriate.

Some particulars: I’m fairly fit, slim, 5’8”, mostly bald with a few gray survivors. Irish white skin. I’m partial to shorter coats.

The classic down jacket is nice and the sherpa collar down is nice too...

Not sure exactly how "wintry" your winter is but...a classic leather jacket is always appropriate and looks great. Also, depending on your particular style, I've seen jean jackets in a variety of fabrics and linings - that might work.
Look at some of the on-line department stores for ideas such as JC Penney, Target, Kohls - you might see something that you never thought of.

you can't go wrong with a classic wool pea coat - can be casual or kind of dressy. or you might check out barn/field coats @ LL Bean.
