I think it's been rap/r and b for a while, as that's what the girls and boys like to dance to, and what's played at clubs and dances and top 40 radio. Also, crap-rock bands like Panic at the Disco and Fall Out Boy have become popular, bands who are predominately influenced by Blink 182, (which isn't a good thing for the future of music.)
However, a mo better current popular band is Deathcab for Cutie, which is more folkish indie rock.
