All of these are ones that I personally use and all are free.
AVG Removes I-Worm/Stration · BackDoor.Generic3.GBB and .GBC · Worm/Generic.FX · Exploit.WMF
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/5390/lng/us/tpl/v5
Spybot - Search & Destroy detects and removes spyware, a relatively new kind of threat not yet covered by common anti-virus applications. Spyware silently tracks your surfing behaviour to create a marketing profile for you that is transmitted without your knowledge to the compilers and sold to advertising companies. If you see new toolbars in your Internet Explorer that you haven't intentionally installed, if your browser crashes inexplicably, or if your home page has been "hijacked" (or changed without your knowledge), your computer is most probably infected with spyware. Even if you don't see the symptoms, your computer may be infected, because more and more spyware is emerging. Spybot-S&D is free, so there's no harm giving it a try to see if something has invaded your computer.

I have been using ESET for the past 6 months and I haven't had any problem. But when comparing ESET with AVG or Norton (panda is out of the competition), I would suggest you to go for AVG. You can also try Kaspersky which is rated as the best virus protecting software.

As well as the previous answers often computer magazines have disk containing security programs. Useful if you prefer not to download. The downside is that they are usually for a limited period only. Make sure you check the magazine for any codes that you may have to enter.

You need a good anti-virus, two anti-spyware and a firewall tp stay protected. Here are the links to get the best in each category(all free):
1.ANTI-VIRUS:
AVG:
http://www.download.com/AVG-Anti-Virus-Free-Edition/3000-2239_4-10596553.html?tag=lst-0-1
2.ANTI-SPYWARE:
AdAware SE:- http://www.download.com/ad-aware-se-pers...
SpyBot Search and Destroy: http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail/spy...
3.FIREWALL:
ZoneAlarm: http://www.majorgeeks.com/ZoneAlarm_Free_d388.html
Never keep two anti-viruses or firewall; remove Norton before you get AVG. Keep them updated and scan your computer once every 2 weeks. :-)

The best free anti-spyware product available is AdAware - see http://www.lavasoftusa.com/products/ad-aware_se_personal.php
