I hate to be taken advantage of but given the choice, I'd like to think that I'd feel worse about turning away someone truly in need. If it's true generosity, nothing is owed back. Although it's nice, sort of a social contract.

At the other extreme is a coworker who said that he always tries to spread good cheer and wishes strangers a good day. That morning he was in a bad mood because he said good morning to someone who didn't notice him and kept walking. He said he felt like chasing after him and saying, "ARE YOU DEAF?!!" See, he didn't actually want others to have a good morning. He wanted to force them to wish him a good morning. I don't consider that at all generous.

There is a difference to being nice and getting used. If you are kind to friends and there is no reciprocating, then stop. It is one sided.. there are givers and takers in life... People will take as long as you are willing to give. If the person you are kind to doesn't show you appreciation then it is a waste of time and effort..
Be a bit more selective about your generosity.. Those who really need and appreciate it will thank you in some way, shape or form, even in words....

Are you being too generous or are you trying to buy friendship or favor? I know several people who tend to bring snacks for everyone frequently to work; they are the ones who give a card for every occasion possible, and may give you a gift for your birthday even though you don't expect it. I gave up years ago trying to reciprocate; felt obligated when someone gave me a birthday present who was an office acquiantance. The food they bring is not always wanted or desired--and for those of us on sugar-restricted diets, the temptation is not really appreciated either.
Just try and be friendly, and sociable. People don't expect other people to be generous except when there is an identifiable need--for example, when someone you know loses their house to fire, or they are seriously injured or have a family member ill or injured, it is fine, and appreciated to offer help. Good neighbors and good friends do that.

Being generous always has a positive feeling.Others may not always reciprocate yet there are people who would be thankful and would help you in future. At night when u would go to sleep ,u will sleep with the thought of making someone happy and u too would feel happy....
So continue being generous.
Best of Luck

i have experienced the same feeling. i think that the most effective thing you could do, is that, if you still want to be generous and kind and help other people, just do not expect anything from them. Just do what you want to do for your own pleasure without expecting something for exhange from others and in this way you can protect yourself.

Don't change for who you are, and don't expect people to respond and react the way you are. They said it's better to give than to receive.

This is a trend! However money cannot get you friends. To get a friend the most important thing you should be able to give them is YOURSELF! Hope that helped!
