Shock treatment or electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) was first introduced to treat schizophrenia, a mental disorder, in the 1930s. Later it was used for many neurological disorders that affected mood. ECT is aimed at ONLY mental health patients. This is a controversial procedure because although there is dramatic short-term improvement in the patient's condition, it is counted as extremely harmful to the patient's long-term mental health.
