Death in Iraq before the war?
I just read this morning that 20 people were killed by a suicide bomber in Iraq. Last time I checked the US military or George Bush were not in the suicide bomber industry.

I am looking for statistical data about deaths prior to 9/11/04 and found that in 2000 there were over 179,000 deaths in Iraq. I know those aren't by natural causes. My thought is there has always been terrorism, suicide bombers, genocide and murders in the area and now that the US has gotten rid of there dictator - and we hear about the deaths...people are all twisted about it.

Also, if you think there were no weapons of mass destruction...you're living in la la land. The reason we know this is b/c when we were against Iran in the 80's we gave Iraq materials to protect themselves.

So does how do we find the deaths in Iraq from 1994-2004?

My point exactly texpaula - in the year 2000 over 179,000 deaths and thats not included the mass graves or Saddam's raids. Which is worse really? At least we trying to do our best protecting the locals from insugents....in reality is it really worse than what it was?

Sorry its not about la la land. Its about a bunch of Democrats playing politics. Everyone knows there were WMD's.

Obviously from the statements above, you have set your mind on what are facts.
I was born in Damascus and raised in Kuwait. Lived in that region through out the Iraq-Iran war and then through the War For Librating Kuwait.

On your statement:
>>Also, if you think there were no weapons of mass destruction... you're living in la la >>land. The reason we know this is b/c when we were against Iran in the 80's we >>gave Iraq materials to protect themselves.

You have a correct statement and an incorrect conclusion. On the part the US gave Iraq the Technology and Material to make WMDs during the war with Iran is correct.
After the 2nd Gulf war (war to liberate Kuwait), Iraq had teams of UN inspectors destroying the Iraqi chemical and biological weapons. Both of which have a shelf life of few months (believe it or not) so unlike nuclear, biological and chemical weapons can't last that long. So from 1991 all the way until 2003, Iraq's WMD were being destroyed and dismantled. Mind you, there were some altercations between Saddam and the UN inspections, which some times escalated into kicking out the inspectors, but almost always when solved the inspectors will come back to continue their jobs.

In light of the above, no one can come up with the conclusion that Iraq had WMD without twisting intelligence (example: the aluminum tubes) or wrong intelligence (examples: the yellow cake and stuff Jalabi was passing to politicians in D.C.)

On your first point, the Iraqi deaths of 179,000 for the year 2000.
On a population of about 21 Millions, that number is above average.
Also post 1991 war there was an embargo on Iraq which has contributed to the death Iraqis with children being the most impacted with these sanctions.
In addition the use of depleted uranium contributed on the other hand to a spike in birth defects and rise of cancer cases; which are good factors to increase mortality rate.
While Saddam brutality is undisputed, the impacts of the sanctions and rise of diseases made the high number of moralities possible.

Iraq from the 1992 to 2003 was stable and secure country under the dictatorship of Saddam and his police state government.
There were no suicide bombings, terrorism, or genocide killing in that period of time. A police state wouldn't allow any of these to happen because they will endanger it's existence.

Hope this helps.

BTW I'm not a democrat

You "know those aren't by natural causes"??? If your source specified, then please include either the link or the attributed causes. Otherwise you're saying that no one died of natural causes in Iraq in 2000. That seems just a wee bit unlikely.

I think though that you grossly underestimate how much Hussein's iron grip supressed sectarian violence. Consider also that the U.S. didn't bother to close the borders when they invaded. They dismantled the police force and infrastructure too. All in all, they created a rather hospitable climate for sectarian extremists to gather and operate.

There are no WMDs. Hussein had plenty of time and reason to dismantle and dispose of them. And plenty of reason to not let Iran know that he had. :-) Trust me, Tony Blair lost all of his credibility on that issue -- if they were there, we would know.

And please don't delude yourself, GWB and the U.S. are definitely in the suicide bomber industry. Their actions have done more to recruit people to the cause than any number of extremist imams.

Since Saddam was burying people in mass graves it might be difficult to research.
