Rare, means there are not many about but they can always breed more without problems. Near extincion means there are very few alive and they are not populating as they should, they are dying faster than they are breeding.

Rarity is a numerical measure of the abundance of a species. It has different implications in wild and domestic settings.

Some species are always rare in some locations for example many European bird species are only occasinally spotted in the UK. Their rarity here has no implications for their survival. Some species are always rare because they have small population sizes but they might be at no risk of extinction for example species that live in the very deep oceans are rare - there are very few of them - but they have evolved to live in this way and are not endangered.

Among domestic animals, a rare breed is much more likely to have some risk of extinction - its rarity means that they are not being bred very much any more and without intervention they may well go extinct. Look at the Rare Breeds Survival Trust website to find out about UK breeds, the work that goes into protecting them and the categories they use to assess the level of threat. It is not just about numbers but other crucial factors such as numbers of breeding males, geographical locations of herds etc. They don't include dogs as of yet, and I don't know whether poodles are just a small breed and rare or whether they are at risk of extinction.

Finally, to address the rhino question - while rarity is important in assessing its status, other factors are also critical. Rhinos face extinction because illegal hunting and habitat destruction are making it impossible for this species to reproduce and maintain stable population numbers. Unless we are able to reverse the current problems then eventually rhinos will lose the struggle for survival.

Poodles are breed by breeders in a controlled setting. A rare breed would be one that is not produced in great numbers.

A near extinction has to do with the population of the animal (rhino) in the wild having such a small number (due to environmental causes, usually man's interference) that they are in danger of becoming extinct (totally lost in the wild).

You can buy a rare poodle. Their breeding is probably controlled so as not to flood the place, making them too popular. The rhino is fighting a losing battle with survival.
