He'd probably do it if they asked him. I wonder why he never wanted to manage the team. But it's a little late for him to start now, alas. (He was, once, for two innings: the Cubs won the game.)
He is 75 years old now. Even Casey Stengel stepped down right around then, though he had broken his hip.
There is indeed a rumor that he and others wish to buy the Cubs. Good luck! Maybe it will happen and the Cubs will win the 2008 World Series! And that would indeed be a fitting tribute to Mr. Cub.
