I think it's well worth it. It is a good story in and of itself, and it will help you to understand what led up to some of the big changes at Marvel (like the Hulk turning grey, Spider Man's black outfit, and Captain America wearing a black-and-white suit) that happened during the years immediately following.

Secret Wars II was also interesting. They can be read as self-contained series, since they are disconnected from what is happening in the regular continuity.

The Beyonder was an interesting character, and what happens to him in the end (the creation of the short lived New Universe) and the creation of a new Cosmic cube) and the destruction of the Molecule Man are important benchmark events in Marvel.

I enjoyed that story very much, it actually turned me into a collector. I had read comics as a kid, but never to the degree that I really had a firm grasp of all the characters and interactions. There are a lot more tie ins than just Venom. Dr, Doom creates Volcana and Titania, Spiderwoman makes her appearance. Klaw is revived. Magneto starts his conversion from bad to misunderstood. Doom finally gets his wish to be the utmost.

It isn't too bad, give it a try. The trade is easier to handle then finding the back issues. Big storyline for it's time.

the series is poor.... only good thing is the origin of venom in #7, but they have since changed his origin in a way that no longer involves secret wars so.............
