Oh well if Elton wants, Elton gets. Someone make him the Queen of the Universe now!

I really do not care too much for Elton John's opinions but I was furious when it was the latest news on Ceefax 150 and on Teletext. He is a celebrity but is his view any more important than anyone elses? It is Rememberance Day today. Around the Cenopath there were reps from many different religions. They were not chewing each others ears off, instead they were reflecting with thousands of other people on the tragedy of war and how so many people have died in conflicts that were not resolved by religion. The news organistations should not broadcast Elton John's views, unless they are prepared to dedicate as much airtime to the views of ordianary people, such as us that are willing to discuss on forums such as this.

Didn't John Lennon come up with banning religion thirty five or so years ago, in a much more public fashion?

Seriously, the human race would likely be much better off without religion, but it's hard to ask that of an evolving race that still has large sections of the world without basic educations. Religion has always been the answer of the mysteries of life for the uneducated (and as they become larger, more dogmatic and contradictory, the stamping ground of the intellectual snob). Whether the religions tenants may be true or not almost invariably are unimportant; you cannot even begin to approach realistically availing humanity of this piece of our racial past until we can deal with meeting the basic needs of every human living. So, good idea or bad, it's not a good time to debate it. Let's get everyone fed first.

I can't imagine there would be much that Elton & I would agree on. If he had a constructive idea then I'd love to hear it.
Ban religious meetings? Is he claiming to be the anti-Christ or something? I thought that was Van Morrison!!!!!
Seriously though I had not heard about this & it is clearly an absurd idea as it would cause more problems than it would solve.

I don't agree with Elton John's desire to ban organised religion but I was heartened by his testimony that he loves the teaching of Jesus.
I think you may have made a better point by asking if we agreed with Elton John and not "the fat gay guy". Simply rude and unnecessary.

I think opinions on religion or homosexuality are completely irrelevant regarding this story.

For me it's the completely breath taking hypocrisy which is really amazing.

Elton's logic seems to go "I expect people to be tolerant towards homosexuals, but I'm so intolerant towards religion that it should be banned"

Tolerance and respect have to work both ways and he does nothing for gay rights with asinine comments like this.

But then he never was the sharpest knife in the drawer.

I don't know that I would go so far as to ban organized religion. However, I do think some churches need to be spring-cleaned.

Organized religions are run by people. People are power hungry. They often forget why they are in church. I so dislike self-righteous do-gooders.

BTW-"fat, gay guy??" And you are perfect?
Don't cast the first stone, my friend.

He's being a hypocrite. He wants to ban organized religion and then says he loves the teaching of Jesus. Where does he think people are going to worship and learn about Jesus without organized religion? He's also a phony because he stayed in the closet long after it was quite obvious to everyone that he was gay, not to mention his marriage to a woman so he would appear to be straight.
