We have plenty of evidence for the theory that the universe was created by the Big bang. The universe was definitely created by the Big bang.

Regarding the theory that God created the universe from scratch, in view of the evidence for the Big Bang that is clearly nonsense and no-one with an ounce of scientific knowledge would accept it.

As to whether God created the Big Bang itself, and then let nature take its course - it is remotely possible. However, unlike the Big bang itself, we have no evidence for the claim that God created the Big Bang. For people to state this claim therefore is blind faith, and has no scientific worth. It is merely their opinion and is not evidence-based.

The Big Bang. The religious types will argue that God created everything and that God has always been. But, where did God come from? Who is God? God is a myth created to give order to people's lives. The Big Bang on the other hand is a feasible, sensible answer as to how it all came to be.

I honestly don't see how anyone could be so full of themself that they could think that they know for sure it's one way or the other. I mean, take the two arguments:

-Big bang for sure, God is ridiculous. No one knows anything more about existance before the big bang than we know about what sparked the first life on this earth. So to say that it just makes more sense is ridiculous becuase the average person knows very little about what actually went on, and the people who study it their whole lives will never know some answers for sure. It's almos the exact opposite of older times when people would be imprisoned for saying things like, the earth isn't the center of the universe. Everyone was told things were a certain way and when people introduced new things, people thought they were crazy. Nowadays most people think new things have to be right, and anyone who believes in something contradictory to that must be crazy.
Another thing that is ridiculous is when people say, well there's lots of evidence for the big bang, and I don't see any for God. That's the way it's supposed to be! If there is a God, faith really wouldn't mean much if He was constantly showing himself and proving his existance. Believing in God would be like believing in gravity, and only a crazy person wouldn't have faith. And no one really has faith and love for gravity, they just know it and rely on it.

- On the opposite side, the people who blindly ignore evidence of the big bang and say no, it was God, can't be big bang, either don't understand the big bang, or are just very very arrogant. I've talked to a lot of people who say that the big bang is blasphemy and couldn't have happened, and quote God creating the world in 7 days and all that. Well here's my theory on that, just because the Bible doesn't explain everything about the creation of the world, doesn't mean that there wasn't more to it than just a click of hte fingers. It said that God created man, but we all accept that a person is a pretty complex structure. The Bible doesn't say, God first created a bone structure, then muscle tissue, then a circulatory system, and so on. So why can't God have created the universe through the big bang? I think religious people who completely disregard ideas like that are doing two things, 1) they underestimate God if they think he couldn't have done something that complex, and 2) they show a lot of intolerance and they are the kind of people who in older times would stone a person for not believing like they do. They tend to blindly follow whatever is told to them and anything that challenges that they cannot handle.

So, short answer, some of both, or one or the other. Not knowing is what keeps us looking for more answers, so anyone who claims to have all the answers is usually very arrogant and not worth listening to. Also, what I've found, is if you don't think there is a God, and you think when you die, that's it, your'e done, then what do you have to lose by devoting yourself to a religion anyway? Maybe in the long run it's not the right religion, but being athiest I think is just lazy. Might as well go onto Deal or No Deal and just decide to leave instead of picking any briefcases because you don't know which is right or don't believe there's anything in them anyway.

Always an interesting argument, but I don't think the two sides... the 'believers" and the "scientists" are all that far apart. Both have problems to explain at the "beginning". The physicist side could say "OK... if God made the universe, what did he make it out of? What were his building materials?" . But the Creator side sould make the same argument to the scientist. The mother of all singularities preceeding the Big Bang.. the matter/energy building blocks. And where was it before there was a universe?

The core problem is that we're trying to come to terms with is "what was the universe like, before there was a universe?" That question get's even trickier because "before" assumes a pre-existing cause/effect reference frame... whether you're a scientist or a theologist. Both sides.. it comes down to "faith"... since neither can prove an unprovable. We're like two drunks standing at the exact North Pole and getting into a knock-down, drag-out fight as to which way is north from where we are.
