All of these are ones that I personally use and all are free.

Spybot - Search & Destroy detects and removes spyware, a relatively new kind of threat not yet covered by common anti-virus applications. Spyware silently tracks your surfing behaviour to create a marketing profile for you that is transmitted without your knowledge to the compilers and sold to advertising companies. If you see new toolbars in your Internet Explorer that you haven't intentionally installed, if your browser crashes inexplicably, or if your home page has been "hijacked" (or changed without your knowledge), your computer is most probably infected with spyware. Even if you don't see the symptoms, your computer may be infected, because more and more spyware is emerging. Spybot-S&D is free, so there's no harm giving it a try to see if something has invaded your computer.

It will remove the viruses, but you will be starting from scratch when you are done. You should get a virus scan and find out what it is. Do you know if it is Malware, Spyware, or a virus. Malware is a pain in the butt, and very hard to get rid of, but I found an interesting way to get rid of it. Spyware and viruses are pretty easy to get rid of with the proper software!
I wouldn't recommend that you reboot your computer if you have allot of work, pictures, or things you might miss. If you choose to reboot, make a backup disc of things you would like to keep!

Why do you think you have viruses on your system?

Have you done a proper virus check and if so why not just remove them or quarantine them with the virus checker?

I do hope you are not confusing spyware with viruses?

Reformatting to get rid of spywear is like using dynamite to destroy a mouse. Another mouse is going to come back and you are going to have to rebuild.
