It is managed by medication...not cured.

"Like diabetes or high blood pressure, schizophrenia is a chronic disorder that needs constant management. At the moment, it cannot be cured, but the rate of recurrence of psychotic episodes can be decreased significantly by staying on medication. Although responses vary from person to person, most people with schizophrenia need to take some type of medication for the rest of their lives as well as use other approaches, such as supportive therapy or rehabilitation. "

Is Schizophrenia Curable

I think it is more manageable and treatable than curable.

From:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schizophrenia
Currently schizophrenia has not been cured although many psychiatrists and psychologists believe that it can be managed. The first line pharmacological therapy for schizophrenia is usually the use of antipsychotic medication. The concept of 'curing' schizophrenia is controversial as there are no clear criteria for what might constitute a cure.

This is a very informative article on schizophrenia.

For the meantime schizophrenia is not curable. Definite causes of schizophrenia remain unknown thus current treatments only focus on eliminating the symptoms of the disease. Available treatments can relieve many of the disorder's symptoms, but most people who have schizophrenia must cope with some residual symptoms as long as they live.

Antipsychotic medications have been available since the mid-1950s which effectively alleviate the positive symptoms of schizophrenia. While these drugs have greatly improved the lives of many patients, they do not cure schizophrenia.♥

Schizophrenia can be successfully treated/managed in many patients, so that the positive symptoms (delusions and hallucinations) don't come back. This isn't the same as "curing" schizophrenia, as 2/3s of people diagnosed with the disorder will have some residual form of it for the rest of their lives.

Schizophrenia does just spontaneously remit (meaning that it just resolves itself after one psychotic break) in 1/3 of the people who get it.

By the way, it's unkind to call people "mental" if they have schizophrenia. I'd bet that, while researching the disorder, you've seen how difficult it can be for those who have it. Name calling is unnecessary. Okay, I'll stop preaching now (sorry).

I have a younger brother who is thirty years old now and we were told his schizophrenia was incurable. But, the state hospital where he was at developed some medications to help him focus on one personality. The trouble is he needs to take four capsules of different medications about three times a day for the rest of his life. One of them is named,Sodium Lithium.
I can't remember the names of the others. But what really freaked us out was that he fathered not only one,but two children. Two girls. One is now seven and the other is two. They are both not only beautiful, but very intelligent considering both their parents are a couple of BURROS. (Know what I mean?)

It's a psychological disease. If it was not curable or at least retainable..what would be the point of psychology.
