That's a good question. I can't recall at the moment. But I does bring a story to mind that I would like to share.

Talking to a schoolmate recently, I asked her how she handles the stress of working on her dissertation. She replied that she cries as she is unable to write when she doesn't.

Based on this, I believe that the act of crying serves a number of purposes. One cries when they are happy; when they are sad; and now, I guess, to reach a state of motivation.

Hope this was able to help.

Building on tedi31's response.. yes! From an evolutionary perspective, crying is an innate behaviour that we have adapted to in order for survival. Newborn humans cry without learning how to, and without crying, they can't communicate their needs to the carer.

So.. yes, crying does serve us good purpose. Studies have also found that the composition of emotional tears is different to that of the tears that normally lubricate the eye. Interesting, eh?

Last time I cried? Not too long ago... :(

Yesterday...they were tears of joy...I took my Cub Scouts on a field trip to the cemetery, to honor the veterans. It was amazing to see all those beautiful little people giving tribute to those that fought for our freedom! There were some men from the local VFW there, and they did a 21 gun salute. We said a poem, and placed a wreath, that the boys had made, on the memorial statue. They really seemed to have a good understanding of what they were doing, and it really touched my heart! It made me feel as though what I was doing, was really worth while. What a great feeling! Thank you to all our veterans and their families. And thank you to all the people who volunteer their time, to mentor the youth of this great nation. God Bless America!
