In the first episode while Kate was stitching Jack up, he told her a story of one of his operations. When he was fixing this girl, he was almost done but he accidentally cut something he shouldn't have. Nerves were spilling out all over the taable like angel hair and Jack was so scarred he didn't know what to do...but he was only gonna give the fear 10 seconds and that's all. So he started counting....one...two...three...four...five...six...seven...eight...nine...ten, and the fear was gone. He stiched her back up and she was fine.
This story is important because when Jack or Kate is scarred, they count to ten and it's over.

He told her once when he was operating on a child, he accidently ripped a nerve sack or something. and when he started freaking out, he agreed to himself he would count to five and then after he counted to five, he wouldnt allow the fear in anymore. after he counted, he sewed her back up good as new!:)
