In terms of the recognition value, I would have to say that the DC characters, Superman and Batman are better known, and their symbols are more easily and widely recognized, than those of any other toons.
As an example, when the Berlin Wall came down, after decades of Communist oppression, one of the first people to cross over was wearing-- a T shirt with a Batman emblem on it. Not Captain America, Batman.
Similarly, stories about Superman hve been translated into every language on Earth.

joe camel is the most recognizable... at least he was, that's why they made camel stop using him. more kids knew who joe camel was than did mickey mouse. and mickey mouse was the second most recognizable. i would guess since joe camel was done away with about 10 years ago now it would be mickey mouse again.
