If you have ever seen jurassic park they explained the answer to this. Over time genetic material becomes fragmented losing pieces making it less likely to be viable for cloning. Over time that mammoth has had a lot of its genes damaged. In order to clone the mammoth scientists would have to insert pieces of elephant genes (the mammoths closest relative) into the mammoths genome. This poses problems first because this is not a perfect science yet and its hard to tell what will happen, or if it will even work for that matter. Even if it does work, this mammoth will not be an exact clone of the original but a hybrid of a mammoth and a modern day elephant.

First of all there is no guarantee that the cloning process would work. They aren't certain if the cloned mammoth could survive the gestation process in an elephant (its closest living relative.) Secondly, there is no way of knowing if it could survive the climate. Third, there is no way of knowing if any of the available vegetation would be suitable...it could very welll starve to death (cruel fate for any creature). Also there is no way of knowing if it could develop an immune system to handle all of the new diseases, germs, and bacteria taht didn't exist in its time period. There is also the question of whether an elephant could suvive giving birth to a mammoth, or if it could even carry it to birth. Then there is the fact that with no other mammoths the creature, if it is anything like modern elephants, would be far too alone to be able to survive. All around it just isn't feasable until we have more information.
There will always be those that have simple moral objections to cloning with no other basis at all, that whole playing god thing and all.

The giant sloth. There is a skeleton in the National History Museum in London, UK. It looks a bit like a bear - but twice as tall. The sabre toothed tiger. The dodo. They all went extinct fairly recently, so there is a chance of getting hold of living cells or DNA. The dinosaurs, which went extinct 65,000,000 years ago would be far, far more difficult to do. But if it is at all possible, Bring them back!!

People are always scared of what they don't understand; plus, too many people have seen Jurassic Park and think it's a simple process. Sigh.

i dont know if there is real opposition to it, but most scientists doubt that it can be done
