Easy, first of all lemme tell you that to try overcoming any kind of fear you should take more of it!. Like, try locking up yourself in your room and switch of all the lights. Slowly when you will realise that there is nobody else other than you in the room you'll overcome the fear of dark. Be a little courageous and fearless and you'll see the difference. I was once scared of Dogs but my mom once told me that they don't do anything (I am talking about kind dogs) and brought a dog near me and told me that it shall not do anything and I should be courageous. It actually did not do anything but licked my feet! See you shall learn too! It's better to overcome a fear rather than staying with it! Take care

Darkness isn't something you should be scared of really. You should really learn to face your fears. I suggest that you try sleeping in a completely dark room everyday. If you're THAT scared you'll be thrilled when you wake up in the morning because nothing happened to you. So, after a few weeks of such sleep you'll get used to it.
Remember, you should not run away from the room at mid night.
And maybe you could try sky watching at night, probably at the time of new moon. Go to some place where there's no menace of city lights. Then, next time you face darkness you should remember those stars and imagine how the darkness in the place is similiar.
Oh, and also remember that there's nothing to hurt you when you are in the dark. And DON'T let anybody know of your phobia, especially if you have older brothers or sort. They'll just worsen it.

This is probably remedy for U:

Go to biggest field U can Go, as long the the field is not crowded with peoples or anythingelse. Blindfold urself, did some free exercise (I had prefer Tai Chi) for about 30 minutes, and meditate 2 hour. Ur eyes are close then focus to other senses, don't take off the blindfold no matter what happen until the 2 hour 30 minute completed. Do it & for 7 days in a row.

Reasoning:
Until then U will understand a little bit about the blind's life. And of course The blind best friend is the darkness.

In the end U will become friend with the dark.

This is ancient Method I got from elder

In my psychology class we watched a video that said being afraid of the dark was natural human instinct. When I was younger I could never sleep without a nightlight, I just progressively used smaller and smaller lights until I almost slept in a pitch black room. I still like having a little light around.

Join any camp that has jungle trekking activities at both day and night time, we'd even assigned to stay at our specific place in the woods alone for 3 hours after midnight. that helps much

Has to do with brain chemicals. Marijuana and maybe speed or any hallucinogen/coke or mind altering drug, I know MJ does and if you have any of that in your system that may be the cause,

if you don't do drugs, its your mind telling you subconsciously (brain chemicals) that theres 'fear' in the dark because it looks scary to that part of your mind (an abnormally in brain chemistry usually)

You can try the "harder" method of practicing staying in the dark. First for a minute, then for two, and continue to increase the intervals of time according to how severe your fears are. If you can handle this method, then sooner or later, you will be freed of your fear.

don't relate dark to "dark" stories, because that's what's scaring you. you think dark, you think fear. work some other thoughts in your head involving dark, happy thoughts, and don't watch thrillers !! i'm afraid of it, too, but only when subjected to scary thoughts.. good luck...

Watch scary movies over and over until they are amusing. Make sure you are in a dark room when you do.

As you get older you will grow out of it, some people take longer than others.

Find a b/f (or g/f) to keep you company instead.
