If you use a shape instead of a circle at the top and bottom of a cylinder, then it will cease to become one.

If you substitute triangles in place of the circles, you will end up with a prism.

If you substitute squares or rectangles in place of the circles, you will end up with a cuboid or cube.

you can use just about any shape you like from an oval to a triangle. HOWEVER, you will no longer have a cylinder!
