All of the above and oh so much more. Every action has an equal and opposite reaction, you can't have happiness without sadness.

It's a mixture of everything and how it affects us. From the people around us, to society, and those we don't even know, everything someone does affects us in one way or another if you think able. It also affects different people different ways. If you are someone who stresses, for lack of a better word, over things a lot, then you take in things that aren't in your favor as a harder hit. Feeling this way upsets the balance of chemicals in your body, making you fell even worse, and then maybe you won't be able to recover on your own--by then, you probably have depression. So in a sense, it's our creation because it is us that has depression (you don't get depression just because someone says so, it's something you yourself feel), it's society's creation since society coined the word (also the definition, the symptoms, ect) and it could be a person's source of depression, and it could be our own selfishness because we may be depressed for selfish reasons.....
There are many causes to depression, whether it's something inflicted onto us, or something we inflict onto ourselves, but what can we do, it's a built in part of our minds. We have to learn to live with it.

I don't think depression nessecarily has to do with any of the things that you mentioned. When you come to the point that you realize you no longer want to live anymore it is hard to go on. 45,000 people die everyday because they don't have enough food to eat. Life is a cruel sad place. It is only when you die to yourself that you can begin again. Personally I have found that once I died to myself I could become alive in Christ. While I am very weak, I have found that he is strong.
-He who dwells in the secret place of the most high, will abide under the shadow of the Almighty. Psalm 91:1

Depression is easy when you feel alone and not worthy of making any difference in the world.Getting involved in one´s family commitments and the community at large will keep depression at bay.Yes, depression is our own creation.

I have heard one theory that the decline in the numbers of people eating fish has coincided with the rise in heart disease and depression, there could be a link there. I've also heard that people with depression don't eat enough natural things like eggs and things high in amino acids.

hI, everyone suffers from depression, its a mixture of various things, it could be low esteem, or a specific trauma, past present looming, (i.e loss of job, breakdown of rlatiionship etc) .
Its how we/you deal with it. if you stay in bed one day and you fel good thats fine its when you do it all the time and your life existance passes you by.
its a sliding scale but YOU are always the one in control.

None of the above. It's due to chemical imbalances in the brain.

severe depression is caused by chemical imbalance. or its caused by childhood trauma. or if we feel like an outcast/lonely we feel that no one likes them/loves them and fear they will be alone. partially i think it is all in our minds depending on how serious your case is. since lets say you were a really spoiled brat...you want a benz but your parents tell you no! you get a civic! then your gonna feel depressed for a really DUMB reason.

we are depressed because we lack something.
For each of us that is a different thing.
For some it is drugs, sex, etc
For some it is work related, a buzz etc
